As many of you know, we are living in an earthquake zone with the last major quake hitting the Comox Valley in 1948. The experts advise that our area is due for another major earthquake and the best precaution is to be prepared.

The good news is that Valley View is a one level school and was built to earthquake specifications. Many of the schools damaged in the 1948 earthquake did not have this advantage. No students were harmed as the earthquake happened on a Sunday.

On that note, we canít predict when an earthquake will happen so we must make sure our children are prepared. A new earthquake committee has been created just for this purpose. This committee has started rebuilding the stock in the earthquake bin. (This bin is located beside the music room portable). It will need to sustain 500 people for 24 hours. This includes students, staff and volunteers. We are planning the stock ( food, water etc.) with long term storage in mind. Once the bin is filled we will set up a system to keep track of expiry dates. This is an important and necessary task.

Your Child will be less scared if
                he or she is PREPARED

Making sure your child is aware that they may be separated from you for a while, is an important part of being prepared.

Preparation will reduce stress.

The more kids (and grown-ups) understand the truth
about earthquakes the less anxiety they may have.

You and your family can cope best by preparing for disaster or emergency before it happens.

Make sure your kids are aware that they may be
separated from you for awhile, but you will come and
get them when it is safe.

Natural hazards, disasters and emergencies can happen at all hours of the day.

Providing children with resources to stay safe on their own or in the classroom is an invaluable asset to our community. Parents should compile an emergency comfort kit for their child and create a family emergency plan to help both kids and parents stay calm when separated in an emergency. Preparing our children for emergencies is one of the first things we can do when faced with security threats and hazardous situations at school.
