Process of preparing Essays/Papers

1. Identify what your topic is.
2. Identify what your assignment is, i.e. goals, format, what is required, size, etc.
3. Brainstorm all known about the topic.
4. Group and organise brainstorming.
5. For each group create questions that are important to the topic and that are not already answered.
6. Identify where to find answers to the questions.
7. Begin researching to find the answers to the questions posed in #5.
8. Collect research data onto sheets that are set up for note taking. Make sure you list resources with the information received from them.

9. Group notes onto pages that have unique topic/idea focuses.
10. Identify any weaknesses and follow steps #5 - #9.
11. Select the best pieces of information and discard any that is not necessary or important.
12. Create a topic sentence for each page.
13. Create support for each topic sentence from the information gathered on the appropriate page.
14. Create a thesis for the overall paper.
15. Place the "topic sentence pages" (#13) in the logical order.
16. Create the body of the paper seamlessly (use links, paragraphing, and logical "flow").
17. Create introduction and conclusion based on the body of the paper created in #16.
18. Put #16 and #17 together into a rough draft.
19. Proof-read rough draft.
20. Let age to perfection (as long as is appropriate for the project, i.e. the more academic and thourough the project, the longer it should sit).

21. Prepare the next draft to prepare for presentation.

22. Indent paragraphs or leave extra space between them.
23. Single space after all punctuation except end-stops which have 2 spaces left behind them.
24. Double space the essay unless otherwise indicated.
25. Quotes:
Ø Marks are needed if used in a sentence or paragraph.
Ø Marks are not needed if set away from the text.
26. Footnotes or endnotes must be used for specific recognition and each work is cited in the order it appears in the paper. Endnotes are placed on their own page at the end of the paper.

27. The bibliography comes at the end of the work and cites every source that was used or strongly influenced the paper. Make sure that everything that appears in #26 also appears in the bibliography. The bibliography is organised alphabetically within each type class. The bibliography is placed on its own page.

28. Self check:
Ø Read each sentence on its own to see if it makes sense.
Ø Ask yourself if each sentence extends/explains or supports the topic sentence
Ø Ask yourself whether or not each paragraph extends/explains or supports the thesis.
Ø Check for any technical or mechanical problems, i.e. grammar, spelling, word choice, sentence construction, verb tense, subject/verb agreement, etc.

29. Let the public benefit from your work and be proud of the paper you have created.
