The Different Parts of a Volcano
A volcano is a mountain or a hill that is made when the magma from the center of the Earth makes it way up to the surface of the Earth making and opening in the mountain or hill. Once that has happened the magma slowly proceeds its way up to the Magma Chamber, which is three mile below the Earth’s surface. The magma sits in the Magma chamber for a while. Once the pressure and the gases are too much, the magma rapidly makes it way up the central vent. The central vent is called the central vent because that is were the majority of the magma goes up and out of. After the magma is at the top of the central vent, it will split different ways forcing some of it go into smaller vents that lead different ways (If it is a Cinder Cone). The smaller vents will come out at the side of the volcano. There is usually a hill on the side of the volcano where the small vent reaches the surface. In the beginning of time lots of the earth’s surface was covered in volcanic activities.
When the volcano starts to erupt there will be a huge ash cloud that sits over the volcano for quite awhile. The ash travels for hundreds of miles. Soon the volcano will erupt and the magma will go everywhere destroying anything and everything in its path.
A volcano is a geological landform, created from hot liquid rock (also know as magma) that forces its way up through the mantle. The hot liquid rock either burst through the Earth's surface as a cinder and ash or oozes out a fiery liquid called lava. It takes many of layers of lava to form a cone shaped figure that soon becomes a volcano. Lava is a name for magma after it has burst through the surface of the Earth. The word “volcano” comes from a little island in the Mediterranean Sea. Years and years ago the people of that island believed that a Vulcano was the chimney of forge Vulcan (the Roman God of the blacksmith). They also believed that the hot lava and cloud of dust erupting was from Vulcano comes from the Vulcano’s forge as he beat out thunderbolts for Jupiter (the kings of god) and the weapons for Mars (the god of war). Now a days we know that volcanoes erupting aren’t super-natural but some people still believe in these myths.
All volcanoes in the world are classified as dormant, active or extinct. Active means that the volcano will erupt at any time or it is erupting at this moment. A volcano that is not erupting, and many not for a while, is called dormant. If a volcano will probably never erupt again it is called extinct. Scientists say that there are about 600 volcanoes active on earth at this time and they say that they put out at least 20-30 eruptions a year! Volcanoes have been around for millions of years. Well hey have been around since the beginning of time (since the Earth has been around).
