Part II: Poetry Forms and Writing Poetry

For the following poetic forms, please create an original and personal poem. Type up this poem, and include colourful images, a border, a title, the date, and your name and division. Please proofread and edit your work for correct spelling.
1. Haiku
Write two Haiku poems using the directions and examples on this site.
2. Rhyming Couplets -- for Kevin who thinks poetry has to rhyme!
Rhyming couplets are two lines of poetry that rhyme. Write a poem or a few poems that contain a series of rhyming couplets, and include examples of all of the poetic devices (simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, personification, hyperbole, and paradox). Make sure you identify each of the poetic devices you include. Use the following site to help you with rhyming.
3. Extended Personification
Read these examples of poems that include extended personification. Create your own poem that personifies an important concept. e.g. life, death, happiness, love, hunger, etc.
4. Limerick -- for Jen who is the least sarcastic person I know and will NOT be allowed to write a limerick about me!
Write a limerick using the directions on this website. Be creative and humorous!
5. "I Have a Dream" Free Verse Poem on Children's Rights
Create a free verse poem that describes the rights guaranteed under the "Declaration of the Rights of the Child" and their importance. Use the "I Have a Dream" site as a general guide. Incorporate poetic devices such as similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, etc. and identify these.
6. Magnet Poetry
Create a free verse poem using the words generated in the "Poetry in Motion" site. Remember to type out your poem.
7. Narrative Poem
Write a narrative poem about a topic of your choice. Use this site to read about narrative poems and see examples.
 
 

Part III: Analyzing Poetry and Music

1. Choose your favourite poem from the following sites or from books in the library. Copy and paste or photocopy this poem onto a sheet of paper.

c. Describe the tone of your poem using examples.
d. Describe the imagery created by your poem. Use examples (which words or phrases helped you see pictures in your mind).
e. Identify the poetic devices that your poem includes. Explain the effect of each of these devices or what they mean.
f. Describe how the poem made you feel. Use examples from the poem to support your answer.
g. Explain what aspect(s) of the poem could you relate to. Be sure to explain why (2-3 reasons).
h. Describe what part(s) of the poem you liked or disliked, and why (2-3 reasons for each).
2. Complete "A Search for Poetry in Music" WebQuest where you identify poetic devices used in modern music, and re-write some of the lyrics in the song so that you change its meaning.
