Children's Stories:

English 9

It all began with an interview and a little imagination...

Cape Lazo Grade 9 students interviewed Grade 2, 3 and 4 students at Brooklyn Elementary. The Grade 9's designed interview questions which created a student interest profile for their Brooklyn buddies. The Grade 9's returned to their school and summarized their findings. Based on this summary, the first draft of the story book was created on Microsoft Publisher. Each Grade 9 had a peer editor, and various tasks were completed to improve the syntax and semantics of the tale. Next, draft copies of the books were taken to the Brooklyn students; the elementary students further edited the stories, making suggestions and providing ideas for illustrations.

The drafts were handed back to the Grade 9's and the final revising commenced. Two copies of the front and back covers were designed (hand-drawn or computer generated graphics), and submitted for lamination. Once students received their laminated covers, they printed two final copies of their stories which were cerloxed together. They were then ready for the hand-drawn illustrations. A duplicate copy of each story was given to the Brooklyn buddies for them to illustrate. Subsequently, the Grade 9's also illustrated a copy. On the celebration day, the Brooklyn buddies and the Grade 9's exchanged copies of the books, participated in informal literature circles, and had a party! This project is an excellent vehicle for promoting positive community relationships between elementary and middle schools. It was a great success!
