Shield

In this project, you will create a shield that illustrates and describes the setting, plot, characters, and theme(s) of your novel.

1. When you are reading the novel, take notes on the setting (time, place, and mood), plot (events), characters, and theme(s) of the book.

2. In large bold font, note the title and author of your novel on the shield. Also include your name, date, and division.

3. In one section, describe the setting (time, place, and mood) of the novel. Use a variety of sentence openers and "dress-ups" to improve the quality of your description.

Setting:

Set in 13th century Europe, this novel begins in the small, rainy village of Ramsay, England. In the centre of the village is the church, and surrounding the village is fertile farmland...

4. In another section, summarize the plot of your novel by describing a minimum of 12 of the main events; write 2 sentences for each of these events. Use a variety of sentence openers and "dress-ups" to improve the quality of your description.

Plot:

Angry and confused, Geoffrey has his blindfold removed and is introduced to Robin Hood for the first time. Proudly, Robin Hood explains to Geoffrey that he will continue robbing from the wealthy until Geoffrey lowers the outrageous taxes in Nottingham.

5. Describe the main characters of the novel in a separate section. Include information about their character traits, and include examples from the novel to support these traits; write 2-3 sentences about each of these characters. Use a variety of sentence openers and "dress-ups" to improve the quality of your description.

Characters:

Catherine is a very stubborn and rebellious woman. For example, she absolutely refuses to marry the horrid suitors that her father arranges for her to wed. In an attempt to scare off a perspective suitor, Catherine torches the outhouse when this unwanted individual is using it.

6. In a final section, explain the main theme(s) of the novel in several sentences. Use a variety of sentence openers and "dress-ups" to improve the quality of your description.

Theme:

Prejudice is a major theme in this novel. Sadly, Jewish individuals were the target of hatred and violence merely because of their religious faith. Feeding into this fear and ignorance, officials in Strasbourg, France, blamed the spread of the Black Plague on the Jewish community and killed thousands of Jewish men, women, and children. There was no foundation for this accusation but prejudice.

7. Incorporate a variety of images and graphics on the shield to better describe the setting, plot, characters, and theme(s) of the novel.

8. Colour the shield.

Criteria:

1. Detailed, accurate, and creative description of the setting of the book.
2. Detailed, accurate, and creative explanation of the main events of the novel (plot).
3. Detailed, accurate, and creative description of the characters in the story.
4. Detailed, accurate, and creative explanation of the theme(s) of the novel.
5. Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and paragraphing.
6. Descriptive language that includes a variety of sentence openers and "dress-ups".
7. Attractive and informative illustrations that represent the setting, plot, and characters of the book.
