Immigrants to Canada

This site is a wealth of information about early immigration to Canada with information about the ships, some passenger lists, written accounts of the voyages, and the Immigrant's Handbooks. Also here you can find information about the child immigrants and the Home Children with detailed accounts, photos and lists of the children that immigrated.

 

The National Archives of Canada

This site is available in English or in French. Here you can search through immigration records, look at photos of immigrants (or order them) and read information in the publications. They are constantly updating and developing this site so keep checking it for changes.

 

Canadian Settlement Patterns

This site offers information about each of the early settlements in Canada with information about where the settlers were from.

 

Citizenship and Immigration Canada

Click on English or French. Here you will find all that you need to know about immigrating to Canada including information about Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Legislation and detailed statistics on immigration in the last 10 years.

 

The Peopling of Canada 1891-1921

This is an on-line tutorial of Canadian Immigration done by the University of Calgary. This is an excellent site with graphs showing the percentages of immigrants homes and the native population. It has lots of information and photographs.

 

Pier 21

This is a fantastic site done by the museum at Pier 21 where many immigrants first landed in Halifax, Canada. There are stories written by immigrants about their experience and information about the ships they arrived on.

 

BC Archives Time Machine

This site offers in introduction to the history of immigration in British Columbia with stories written by the original settlers.
