ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES

I can research various countries of the world using the Internet and electronic encyclopaedias.

I can create a travel guide brochure in Microsoft Works, Word or Publisher to show what I have learned about the country that I studied and incorporate pictures from the Internet and from Encarta.

INTRODUCTION:

This lesson is designed to help teachers create a travel brochure with their class. We will be recommending some WebQuests that have been developed by teachers in our district in order to cover this lesson.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

It is expected that students will:

research information using print, non-print, and electronic sources
assess the relationship between cultures and their environments
compare individual rights and social responsibilities in various cultures
compare systems of government in selected countries
describe and compare different economic systems
locate and describe major geographic features and selected nation states of the world
assess settlement patterns and population distribution in selected countries
compare use of resources and conservation practices in Canada and other countries

COMPUTER SCOPE AND SEQUENCE:

Move between applications.
Create a documents integrating text, charts and images (clip art, scanned images, digital camera images, original images).
Relate writing process to computer.
Write a simple caption or story to accompany a picture.
Transcribe text from a prewritten document.
Change font, size, style and colour of text appropriate to presentation.
Copy and paste images into document (clip art, scanned images, digital camera images, original images).
Save, name and retrieve files.
Insert the cursor to add or delete text.
Introduce elementary graphic elements
Change the margin settings.
Create a document using columns (brochure, newspaper).
Change print options (print specific pages, paper size and orientation).
Position and resize (text and images) to achieve an affective presentation.
Move text and/or images (clip art, scanned images, digital camera images, original images) between two or more documents.
Create a paint frame in a word processing document.
Combine information from multiple sources for presentation.
Identify, define/locate sources of electronic information (e.g. CD-ROM, Internet).
Select relevant information.
Capture information from an article and transfer notes to a notepad.
Launch browser to access the World Wide Web, FTP sites, Gopher.
Access information files and search sites.
Evaluate search results for accuracy/relevance.
Observe appropriate etiquette at all times.
Navigate a variety of multimedia documents (e.g. Hypercard, Kidpix, HTML).
Practice handling Internet information in an ethical way.

LESSONS:

We presently have two WebQuests developed by local teachers in order complete this requirement. Both of these are complete units with resources and evaluation sections. There are also instructions provided within the lessons for creating brochures.
