SECTION 4 – WHY NOT TO SMOKE

The object of this lesson is for Grade 5 students to research the effects of smoking on our bodies through a site designed for this purpose and through looking at real pictures of lungs of smokers and non-smokers (optional). At the end students will make posters advertising why not to smoke. You may choose to do this lesson during the end of January when it is Smoking Awareness Week.

  1. You have been studying the Respiratory and Circulatory Systems. Now you can look at the effects of smoking on your Respiratory System. Make a chart showing what the you already know about the effects of smoking on your lungs.
  1. Together arrive at a criteria for making posters to promote not smoking and come up with a marking scheme for it (what must be included, how many marks for each section).

    Students can navigate through the information in this site and gather information about smoking. Another section of this site deals more with the effects on our lungs:

    Within this site there are also some games that students who show you that they have gathered enough information should feel free to play.

  4. Students can also look at cross sections of the lungs of a smoker with emphysema. You should look at these on your own decide if they are appropriate for your class to see because they are very graphic:
