Using PowerPoint

 

1.        Launch PowerPoint by clicking on Start / Programs / Microsoft PowerPoint. The following screen will appear:

 


 


2.        Make sure “Blank presentations” is selected and click “OK”. The following screen will appear:


 


3.        Generally you will select the layout of the slide you want and click “OK”, but for now, choose the top left slide for your first slide. Later, select the slide that best works for what you are presenting.

 

4.        Now, click your mouse on “Click to Add Title” and type what you would like to appear as your main title for the presentation.

 

5.        Then click your mouse on “Click to add sub-title” and type the information you want here.

 

 

6.        To add another slide, click on Insert / New Slide. Select the auto layout you want and click “OK”.

 

7.        Repeat the process you have used for the first slide.

 


Inserting Graphics

 

1.        Start with inserting another slide (Insert / New Slide). Select the following slide:

 


               

2.        Add a title by clicking on “Click to add title”.

 

3.        Then click on Insert / Picture from File. Navigate to F:\powerpnt\ and select one of the images there. A  screen similar to the following will appear:

 


 


4.        Select the image you want and click “Insert”. The image will appear in your Powerpoint slide.

 

5.        Re-size the image by clicking on it. Note how little boxes appear in all four corners and in the middle of the slides. Grab one of these with the mouse and drag the image in or out to make it smaller or larger. Note: If you grab the corners the image re-sizes in scale. If you grab the middle of the lines, the image “morphs”.

 

6.        Move the image to where you want by clicking on the image, holding the mouse down until the moving icon appears (it is a little Coptic Cross??), then moving the image to where you want it and letting go of the mouse.

 

7.        Now save your presentation to your L:\ drive.

 


Adding Colour To Your Presentation

 

1.        Click on Format / Slide Colour Scheme.

 

2.        The following dialogue box should appear:

Select the Custom tab and click on the Background box.

 


4.        The click the “Change Colour” button. A colour “wheel” will appear. Click on the colour your are interested in, then click “OK”. This inserts your colour selection in the background box.

 

5.        Repeat this process for the Text and Lines, Shadows, etc.

 

6.        When you are satisfied, click “Apply To All” to apply this to all of the slides in you presentation.

 

7.        Save your work.

 


Animating Your Presentation

 

1.        Go to the slide you have created with a caption or title and a picture.

 

2.        Click on Slide Show / Custom Animation. The following screen should appear:


 


3.        Click on the “timing” tab. Select Title 1 and click on the animate circle. This sends the title into the “Animation Order” box. Repeat the process with the picture frame slide object. It too will appear in the “Animation Order” box.

 

4.        Now click on the “Effects” tab. Select “Title 1” and in the “Entry animation and sound” box, select an animation. The click the “Preview” button to get an idea of what will happen. Play around and see what you can get.

 

5.        Repeat the process with the next slide object.

 

6.        Move to other slides and apply animation.

 

7.        Save your work.

 

WARNING:  Keep it simple. Some presentations a ruined by an excess of effects. Consider your audience.

 


Viewing Your PowerPoint Presentation

 

1.        Click on View / Slide Show

 

2.        Advance through the presentation by clicking your mouse.

 

3.        Press “Escape” when ever you want to return to your working screen.

 

4.        Note how you can do the same thing by clicking on the icon on the bottom left of your screen. It looks like this:

Try “mousing over” other icons on the PowerPoint screen to see what they do.
