STUDYING THE PROVINCES AND TERRITORIES
In this lesson students will use the Internet to research the Provinces and Territories of Canada and learn about their symbols.
GRADE 3 SOCIAL STUDIES IRPs COVERED:
It is expected that students will:
- Identify the characteristics of the provinces and territories of Canada.
- Identify the characteristics of Canadian society.
- Create a presentation on a selected topic.
LESSON:
- You can chose one of these worksheets (Click here to access worksheet one in MSWord or click here to access worksheet two which is a little less detailed) to guide your students in their study of the provinces or have them take notes as they read about each province.
- In the computer lab or on your home computer, students log-in then enter the
Internet and type in the address:
sd71.bc.ca/sd71/edulinks/Canada/index.htm
- Students click on the provinces to open up information about each province.
- Have the students use this information to create a final project. Some ideas for this are:
-Write a postcard from each province to your home telling of what you saw. On the front of each postcard, draw a picture that tells something about that province (one of the symbols or a picture of what the landscape looks like).
-Create a book about the provinces and territories of Canada with each page displaying information about the symbols and environment found in each one.
-Create a "Lapbook" about Canada. Click here to learn more about Lapbooks
Click here to look at another website about Lapbooks
-Create a PowerPoint presentation or Kid Pix slide show of your trip across Canada.
