STUDYING THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT
OF CUMBERLAND
In this lesson, students will use the Internet to discover
information about the development of the community of Cumberland, BC.

It is expected that students will:

- B4 identify characteristics of Canadian society
- D1 compare ways in which needs and wants are met in communities

- E4 describe how the physical environment influenced early settlement in their local community or
another community studied
BACKGROUND:
Cumberland is a really interesting community as it got its start as a mining town. I really recommend that you finish this unit off by doing the walking tour or by visiting the Cumberland Museum.

- Students can then enter the Internet on their computer and
type in the address for the Cumberland Museum Archives site: http://www.cumberlandmuseum.ca/cgi-bin/show_home.cgi (it is on their sheet).
- Students follow the instructions on the worksheet where
they write the answers to the questions.
- In class go over the answers to the worksheets together
and ensure that students have all the answers recorded.
EXTENSIONS:
-You may wish to take your class on a field trip to the
Cumberland museum or invite a speaker in who grew up in Cumberland and knows
about its past.
-Do a walking tour of Cumberland and find some of the buildings that you read about on the worksheet. See if you can take pictures of some of the buildings now and compare them to what the buildings looked like then.
-Create a poster of Cumberland: Then and Now
